Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Tuesday (July 7th) that Iran will not start negotiations on the final agreement if US threats continue, while Tehran has escalated on the ground by targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Araqchi wrote in a post on X: "Negotiations on the final agreement will not begin if the threats continue.Respect your signature," he said, following US President Donald Trump's threat to "finish the job" if no agreement is reached.
The Iranian people and their armed forces "do not fear any threats," the Iranian minister added, adding that millions of Iranians gathered at the funeral ceremony in Tehran to pay tribute to the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his legacy, stressing that "none of them knows fear in the face of threats."
Trump: Either we reach a deal or we finish the job
Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday, "Either we reach an agreement or we get the job done. Okay. It won't be difficult to finish the job.I'd rather get an agreement, because I don't want it to affect 91. A million people."
"We can tear down their bridges in an hour, we can cut off their energy supply... They don't have any money now.We didn't give them any money."
Trump claimed in a statement to Axios on Saturday that the Iranians were "begging" to reach an agreement, but added that the two sides had decided to suspend the talks for a week until the funeral of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was over.
In the meantime, neither side will fire at the other, but a fire broke out on Monday in a tanker after it was hit by an unknown projectile on its left side while sailing south, about 15 kilometers east of Lima in Oman, he said.
Washington accuses Iran of targeting tanker off Oman
U.S. officials told Axios that the IRGC fired at least two missiles at commercial ships that were crossing the Strait of Hormuz on Monday evening, while two commercial ships were heavily damaged without causing any casualties.
Britain's Maritime Trade Operations Authority said early on Tuesday that a fire broke out on the tanker after it was hit by an unknown projectile on its left side while sailing south, about 15 km (15 miles) east of Lima in Oman.
This comes as indirect talks between Washington and Tehran are set to resume after Khamenei's funeral ceremony ends, negotiators said, the day after a round of talks in Doha as part of diplomatic efforts aimed at clarifying a final end to the war in the region.
