The Director General of the General Authority for Precious Metals Management, Misbah al-Aswad, revealed that the number of goldsmith workshops and shops owned by Syrians in various Turkish cities amounts to approximately 490 workshops and shops, with the majority concentrated in Istanbul, followed by Gaziantep, while the rest of the facilities are distributed across other Turkish cities.
Al-Aswad clarified in a statement to a SANA correspondent today, Tuesday, that Istanbul hosts approximately 40 Syrian goldsmith workshops, including 30 workshops in the "Kayumcu" complex specialized in gold manufacturing, and 10 workshops outside it, in addition to approximately 120 gold shops owned by Syrians, out of a total of approximately 330 Syrian shops across Turkey.
Exchanging Expertise to Develop Local Gold Industry
Al-Aswad pointed out that this presence constitutes an opportunity to enhance communication with Syrian goldsmiths working in Turkey, exchange professional and technical expertise with them, and benefit from their experiences in developing the gold and jewelry industry in Syria, particularly in areas such as work organization, improving the quality of products, and developing production methods.
He noted that the visit of the Authority's delegation to Turkey at the beginning of the current month allowed for observing the reality of the gold industry and its regulatory mechanisms, learning from the experience of managing goldsmithing complexes and specialized markets, as well as discussing the challenges facing Syrian goldsmiths and ways to expand cooperation between professional entities in both countries.
Overcoming Obstacles to Gold Trade
Al-Aswad emphasized the importance of coordinating with relevant Turkish authorities involved in the jewelry industry, its export, and trade chambers to address difficulties hindering gold trade between the two countries, particularly regarding customs procedures, and to facilitate the entry of Syrian goldsmiths into Turkey to participate in exhibitions, visit markets, and industrial machinery and equipment sales centers.
He affirmed that developing commercial and professional cooperation, and benefiting from Turkish expertise in organizing workshops and factories and updating industrial infrastructure, would support local production, enhance the quality of Syrian gold products, and strengthen opportunities for their access to external markets.
The General Authority for Precious Metals Management in Syria was established in February 2025, with the aim of regulating and developing the gold and precious metals sector, and enhancing its role in the national economy within an independent financial and administrative institutional framework, in addition to overseeing the gold pricing mechanism through goldsmith associations in the governorates.
