Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Ati held talks on Monday in Cairo with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss developments regarding escalation in the region and its repercussions on regional and international situations, as well as efforts aimed at resolving conflicts and enhancing joint cooperation.
De-escalation efforts
Abdel-Ati emphasized the importance of continuing consultation and coordination to contain tensions and de-escalate, prioritizing the diplomatic track to reach comprehensive and sustainable settlements. He stressed the necessity of strengthening joint international action to confront the serious repercussions of escalation, particularly those related to food security and freedom of navigation.
Humanitarian and regional situations
The two sides discussed the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where the Egyptian Foreign Minister outlined continuous efforts to ensure full and sustainable access for humanitarian aid. He stressed the importance of preserving the fundamental role played by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), noting that there is no alternative to it in its areas of operation.
Regarding developments in Sudan and Libya, Abdel-Ati emphasized the importance of preserving Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He reiterated Egypt's firm position on the Libyan crisis, calling for a comprehensive political settlement that safeguards Libya's unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions.
Supporting UN reform
Guterres expressed appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role in supporting UN efforts at both regional and international levels, highlighting its effective contributions to resolving conflicts and enhancing peace and stability. In this context, Abdel-Ati affirmed Egypt's support for UN system reform efforts, stressing that the reform process must be comprehensive, based on international law and its principles, and synchronized with Security Council reform to ensure fair representation for African countries.
He also stressed the necessity of the UN playing a role in driving efforts to achieve sustainable development goals, providing development financing, addressing the debt crisis and increasing burdens on developing countries, reforming the international financial system, and making climate finance available, taking into account the priorities of developing countries and enhancing their capacity to achieve development and improve living standards.
These talks come amid rising regional tensions and ongoing crises in several countries in the region, coinciding with international calls to intensify diplomatic efforts and enhance the UN's role in resolving conflicts, supporting stability, and meeting humanitarian needs.
