The importance of air traffic controllers as a fundamental element in ensuring the safety of air navigation and organizing aircraft movements in Syrian airspace and airports is highlighted through continuous coordination with pilots and providing necessary guidance for takeoff, landing, and transit operations, ensuring smooth flights and compliance with international safety standards.
On the occasion of World Air Traffic Controller Day, which falls on October 20, Alaa Al-Din Al-Rifai, Director of the Air Navigation Services Department at the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport, explained that the Air Traffic Control Center at Damascus International Airport oversees the movement of transit and incoming aircraft from neighboring countries, while air traffic control staff in airport towers direct aircraft during takeoff and landing operations.
For his part, Salim Barakat, Head of the Air Traffic Control Department, clarified that an air traffic controller’s work is divided into three main parts at the airport: the Air Traffic Control Center, the Air Traffic Control Tower, and the Pilots’ Information Center, where the center provides the tower with the necessary information and plans for landing, taking off, and transiting aircraft.
Barakat noted that the Air Traffic Control Center is responsible for organizing aircraft movements and separating them in Syrian airspace, where hundreds of aircraft pass daily in accordance with global laws and regulations. He explained that communication between air traffic controllers and pilots is conducted in English, the standard language in this field, emphasizing that this profession requires precision, quick thinking, decision-making ability, and teamwork.
October 20 of each year marks World Air Traffic Controller Day, which aims to highlight the role of air traffic controllers in ensuring the safety of air traffic and flight smoothness, and to appreciate their efforts in organizing aircraft movements and maintaining the safety of air navigation.
