Al-Adhab: Consolidating Dialogue and Preserving Differences Are Two Pillars of Social Cohesion
Dr. Du'a Al-Adhab emphasizes that dialogue and safe spaces are essential for protecting social cohesion.

Dr. Du'a Al-Adhab, a member of the People's Council and a researcher in social psychology, affirmed that enhancing the culture of dialogue and providing a safe environment for public debate constitute a fundamental approach to protecting social cohesion, especially in light of the challenges posed by incitement and hate speech in public discussions.

Al-Adhab pointed out that building this culture requires reviewing legislation and closing loopholes to ensure the protection of citizens and reject forms of threats, while preserving the right to criticism and difference. She noted that disagreements turn into exclusionary practices when they take the form of betrayal and attacks on dignity.

Clear guidelines and safe spaces for dialogue

Al-Adhab called for providing safe spaces for dialogue based on clear guidelines that prevent insults and betrayal, and protect everyone's right to expression, with the assistance of facilitators to manage discussions. She emphasized the necessity of fully safeguarding the rights of the affected and not exerting any pressure on them to waive these rights.

Addressing the causes of marginalization and enhancing citizenship

Al-Adhab highlighted that understanding the reasons behind the isolation of some individuals requires directly listening to their concerns and addressing feelings of marginalization. She affirmed that citizenship is the foundation of protection and that responsibility for transgressions must remain individual. She stressed the importance of consolidating the acceptance of differences through educational and media curricula.

Societal and legislative role in protecting dialogue

Al-Adhab explained that civil society institutions can play a role in building bridges of communication by bringing individuals together around common interests. She pointed out the importance of reviewing legislation, precisely defining criminalized acts, and activating oversight in violations that affect the stability of citizens.

Within the framework of efforts to curb hate speech, the Syrian Media Academy, in partnership with the Ministry of Media and the United Nations Development Programme, launched the "The Word Builds" campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of hate speech and misinformation.
