Al-Ahli calls on UN to designate Houthis as a terrorist organization
Al-Ahli urges UN to designate Houthis as terrorists, enforce arms embargo, and hold backers accountable.

Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi called on the United Nations to take international action to designate the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization, ensure the implementation of an arms embargo against it, cut off its funding and arms sources, and hold its supporters and those responsible for its violations accountable.

The Yemeni news agency "Saba" reported that this came during a phone call on Monday between al-Alimi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in which they discussed the latest developments in the country, amid the Houthi militia's escalation of attacks and their repercussions on international peace and security.

Al-Alimi briefed Guterres on the latest escalation, including Houthi militia attacks using missiles and drones on state institutions and civilian facilities, and the expansion of their attacks on cities and villages, coinciding with the siege of the city of Taiz and the shelling of its residential neighborhoods.

Al-Alimi pointed out that the Yemeni government has dealt responsibly with initiatives and agreements aimed at ending the war, while the militia responded to those efforts with escalation, exploiting ceasefires and political efforts to regroup and continue its violations.

He stressed that the current stage requires the international community to move from condemnation to the full implementation of resolutions of international legitimacy, emphasizing the importance of ending the Houthi threat, lifting the siege on cities, and opening safe routes and passages for civilians and food and medical supplies.

For his part, Guterres affirmed the UN's commitment to providing stronger support to the Yemeni government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the face of all threats. He also strongly condemned the Houthi militia's attacks inside Yemen and across borders, expressing his rejection of the continued detention of UN staff and public workers, and all violations of international law.

Al-Alimi had previously discussed on Friday during a phone call with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband the latest developments in Yemen and the region, and joint efforts with the international community to enhance security and stability.
