Syria鈥檚 Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Al-Alabi, affirmed that the Syrian government prioritizes the issue of internally displaced persons, noting that a large number of government officials are themselves internally displaced and understand the suffering and pain of displacement.
In this context, Al-Alabi highlighted during his participation in a side event titled "Reconstruction and Sustainable Solutions for Internal Displacement Following Mass Destruction Resulting from Conflict and Disasters" the vision of "Syria Without Camps" launched by the Syrian government during the High-Level Week of the eighty-first session of the UN General Assembly. This vision aims to close camps in Syria through reconstruction, providing basic services, and livelihoods in areas from which residents were displaced due to the practices of the ousted regime, its targeting of civilians in their homes, and the deliberate destruction of infrastructure.
Al-Alabi noted that the Syrian government has succeeded in ending the root causes of internal displacement, but the return of displaced persons requires significant resources, calling on the international community to provide the necessary support to turn the "Syria Without Camps" vision into reality and end the displacement crisis in the country, including financial, technical, and political support.
For his part, Al-Alabi added that the Israeli occupation army is causing a new displacement crisis in southern Syria through intimidating practices against Syrian citizens, including killing and kidnapping, including children, and targeting livelihoods and destroying property. Al-Alabi strongly condemned the Israeli occupation forces' targeting of a Syrian citizen with special needs and killing him yesterday, Thursday, highlighting the protests that took place in Syria today, Friday, against the occupation.
The Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations renewed the Syrian government's call on the international community to bear its responsibilities to stop these attacks and pressure Israel to return to implementing the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. The Israeli occupation continues to violate the 1974 Disengagement Agreement through its repeated incursions into southern Syria, raiding civilians' homes and arresting them, bulldozing land, and carrying out shelling attacks.
Syria continues to demand the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation from its territories, affirming that all measures taken are null and void and have no legal effect under international law. It also calls on the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and compel Israel to fully withdraw from southern Syria.
