Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Al-Alabi, affirmed that the national priority lies in translating the political and diplomatic successes achieved into tangible economic and developmental achievements, emphasizing his country’s commitment to working with the international organization to enhance partnerships.
Focus on Economic Development
Al-Alabi, in Syria’s statement before the Second Committee on Economic and Financial Affairs during the discussion of the agenda item titled "Eradication of poverty and other development issues," on Friday, stated that Syria has worked during the eightieth session of the General Assembly to consolidate its political and diplomatic return after liberation.
He added that the focus in this session is on opening new economic horizons for Syrians, and reflecting the impact of openness and cooperation on their lives and employment opportunities, noting that Syria’s engagement in the Committee’s work aims to build partnerships and mobilize international cooperation in support of national priorities.
Economic Recovery and Challenges
The Syrian envoy pointed out that the Syrian economy has begun to recover and is moving towards regaining its vitality and opening doors to cooperation and investment, while acknowledging that the road is still long and that decades of mismanagement and years of war do not erase their effects overnight.
He clarified that Syria possesses the capabilities of its sons and daughters, its location, its resources, and the will of its people who chose to rise, as well as its partners and friends around the world, noting that the Committee’s discussions on eradicating poverty, agricultural development, and food security touch the core of Syria’s new priorities.
International Cooperation and Mine Clearance
Al-Alabi affirmed that Syria looks forward to its partners accompanying this stage through expanding economic and developmental cooperation, supporting investment, production, and job opportunities, rehabilitating infrastructure, and clearing mines and war remnants that prevent people from returning to their lands, farms, and homes.
He added that Syria is fully prepared to work with the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and member states with a spirit of openness and responsibility, in support of its national priorities and efforts to achieve sustainable development goals for all.
