The Directorate of Agriculture in Al-Hasakah Governorate confirmed that the spread of the black field cockroach in villages of the southern countryside is a seasonal insect phenomenon associated with weather fluctuations, stressing that these insects are safe and do not transmit deadly diseases. The Directorate called on residents to follow preventive guidelines and take field measures to ensure they do not spread.
For his part, Agriculture Director Engineer Haile Al-Kalash clarified that the Directorate issued an awareness leaflet via social media platforms addressed to residents of villages in southern Al-Hasakah countryside, following the spread of large numbers of insects after recent rains. The leaflet explained that the damage caused by the insect is limited to annoyance and the spoilage of some materials when they spread in large numbers, stressing the necessity of turning off exterior lights at night to avoid attracting them.
Al-Kalash pointed out the importance of securing home entrances and installing screens on them, sealing cracks and sewage openings, as well as disposing of garbage and waste. He stressed the necessity of taking field measures such as surface plowing, collecting and removing crop residues, and plowing fallow lands and areas surrounding villages to expose eggs and larvae to sunlight and natural enemies.
In the same context, the Agriculture Director stressed the importance of creating light traps outside residential areas, and coordinating with relevant authorities to implement focal spraying at night or early in the morning.
