Diplomatic Efforts Discussed
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi discussed on Tuesday evening efforts to reach a "sustainable" ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. This came during a phone call received by al-Safadi from Araghchi, according to a statement from the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
The ministry stated that the talks covered efforts to stop escalation, "leading to a comprehensive solution to the crisis (between Iran and the United States), and an agreement for a sustainable ceasefire." The call comes within the framework of efforts to contain tensions between Washington and Tehran, and the continuation of disagreements regarding the conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Calls for Respect for International Law
Al-Safadi stressed the "importance of pooling efforts to restore calm, and achieve permanent security and stability, on bases that ensure the security and stability of all countries in the region." He affirmed the "necessity of respecting international law, principles of good neighborliness, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz."
Background of Historical Tensions
On February 28 last, the United States and Israel started a war on Iran, while Tehran responded with attacks on Israel and what it said were US military facilities in Arab countries. On June 18 last, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding and began negotiations that later collapsed due to disagreements, including navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a strategic passage for global energy and goods supplies.
Condemnation of Attack in Jordan
On another note, Araghchi condemned the attack targeting a church in the town of Hamoud in Karak Governorate, southern Jordan, and conveyed Iran's condolences to its victims, according to the same source. Armed men opened fire on mourners at the Hamoud church on Friday, in an attack that killed 9 people, according to the announced toll.
The Jordanian Public Security Directorate announced on Monday the arrest of the 3 perpetrators of the attack, after an armed clash.
