Minister of Agriculture Bassel Al-Sweidan held discussions with the Agriculture and Food Security Committee of the People's Council regarding the reality of the agricultural sector and the most prominent challenges it faces, as well as ways to develop the policies and legislation regulating agricultural work, and enhance cooperation to support local production and achieve food security.

The Ministry of Agriculture clarified via its Telegram channel on Wednesday that the meeting focused on identifying the needs of Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, and Al-Hasakah governorates, and following up on the implementation of agricultural plans in them, alongside developing irrigation projects and addressing challenges related to rising production costs, crop marketing, and the aging of agricultural machinery and equipment.

The meeting reviewed the main axes of the Ministry's strategy, including updating agricultural policies, developing the organizational structure, enhancing digital transformation, raising staff efficiency, improving water resource management, securing production supplies and necessary financing for farmers, alongside supporting rural development and developing the livestock sector, protecting forests and natural resources.

Updating agricultural legislation

The attendees also discussed ways to update agricultural legislation to suit the sector's needs, enhance local seed production, develop agricultural research, investment, and partnership with the private sector, improve the quality of agricultural products, and enhance their competitiveness.

The meeting discussed the demands of the members of the Agriculture and Food Security Committee regarding the development of legislation, improving the conditions of agricultural and veterinary staff, qualifying agricultural facilities, providing the prerequisites for stability in the desert areas, and enhancing the state's role in regulating the agricultural sector while encouraging investment.

Integration of efforts

Minister Al-Sweidan emphasized the importance of integrating efforts between the Ministry and the People's Council, and enhancing coordination and continuous communication to follow up on farmers' issues, address challenges facing agricultural production, and develop necessary plans to achieve sustainable agricultural development.

It is worth noting that the Agriculture and Food Security Committee of the People's Council held a number of meetings on the 25th of the current month, chaired by Israa Al-Mashhour, the Committee Chairperson, with the aim of discussing the most prominent legislation related to the agricultural sector and food security.

The Agriculture and Food Security Committee was formed last August, pursuant to Decision No. 109 of 2026 issued by the Chairman of the People's Council, which stipulates the appointment of members of the permanent committees, their chairs, and their deputies.
