Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, announced that journalists in the Gaza Strip have become victims of Israel's war of genocide, noting that Western media outlets are concealing Israel's responsibility for these crimes. This came during a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, where Albanese participated via video to present her report titled "The Truth Under the Rubble: Media in the Time of Genocide" to the General Assembly.
In the same context, the UN Special Rapporteur pointed out that Israel is working to silence opposition media within its borders, having banned more than 1,600 articles and censored over 1,100 articles during 2024. She also accused Israel of waging an "information war" through platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, expressing criticism of Western media for conflating opposition to genocide with antisemitism.
For her part, Albanese criticized Israel's prohibition on foreign press entering Gaza independently, citing security risks since the start of the war in October 2023. She affirmed that what Palestinian journalists document does not require foreign journalism to prove it, pointing out the lack of significant pressure from Western media to allow journalists into the Strip. Since the war broke out in October 2023, 263 journalists and media workers have been killed, and more than 433 others injured, according to figures from the Strip's government media office.
She added that Israel continues its daily violations of the ceasefire agreement in effect since October 10, 2025, which has resulted in the killing of 1,565 Palestinians and the injury of 5,640 others as of Tuesday. Since October 2023, Israel has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000 others, while destroying approximately 90 percent of the Strip's civilian infrastructure.
