Alberta residents vote to remain in Canadian federation
76% majority in non-binding referendum rejects secession and supports national unity

Ottawa-SANA

Residents of the Canadian province of Alberta voted on Tuesday in the first referendum of its kind held in the province, in favor of remaining within Canada and rejecting the option of secession. Preliminary results of the referendum, according to the Canadian "CBC" network, showed that approximately 76% of voters supported the option of remaining within Canada, while 23% supported moving forward to organize a binding vote on secession, while the current referendum remains legally non-binding.

Political Reactions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the result, emphasizing that Alberta residents chose unity and joint work to build the country's future. Carney considered that the vote reflects Canadians' commitment to national solidarity in light of the current economic and trade challenges facing the state.

Smith's Initiative

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced last May the holding of the referendum to measure the province's residents' attitudes towards the future of their relationship with the Canadian federation. Smith expressed her relief at the preliminary results, noting that she would discuss the next steps with the province's residents.

Economic and Political Background

Alberta, located in western Canada, is one of the wealthiest Canadian provinces thanks to its vast oil and gas reserves, which form a cornerstone of the country's energy sector. In recent years, the province has witnessed rising voices demanding more powers or secession, driven by disagreements with the federal government over environmental and energy policies and resource distribution.

However, opinion polls have consistently indicated that the majority of residents prefer to remain within the Canadian federation while seeking to address controversial issues through dialogue and political reforms.
