Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz predicted that competition at the top of men's tennis in 2027 would not be limited to a two-way battle between him and Italian Jannik Sinner, noting that German Alexander Zverev broke the duo's dominance over the four Grand Slams, and that player Ben Shelton showed signs of potentially joining the global elite.
In the same context, Alcaraz told the media after winning the Vienna Open that the preparation period for the season is very important, emphasizing that players take the pre-season phase seriously and spend weeks in hard training to be at the highest level of physical fitness.
For his part, Alcaraz pointed out that Zverev showed what he is capable of doing, describing him as the best player this year and deserving of that position, expressing his wish to see Zverev continue achieving the wonderful accomplishments he made during the current year in the 2027 season.
He added that Shelton reached a Grand Slam final for the first time, believing he is ambitious and eager to achieve more next year, clarifying that other players are also performing excellently and striving to train at maximum effort to be in their best condition for the upcoming season.
Alcaraz shared the Grand Slam titles with Sinner in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, but the injuries they suffered this year opened the door for Zverev to win the French Open and US Open titles. Alcaraz won his seventh Grand Slam title at the Australian Open on Sunday before an wrist injury kept him off the courts for more than four months.
Since his return at the US Open, he has won two titles in Tokyo and Vienna, and will seek to end the season ideally when he participates in the Paris Masters tournament scheduled for this week before the season-ending event starting on November 15.
