Algeria and the Muslim World League condemned Colombia's opening of its embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem, affirming that this step violates international law and relevant United Nations resolutions concerning the legal and historical status of the city.
Rejection of changes to the legal status
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement published on the "X" platform, affirmed that the decision constitutes a rejected step that falls within the framework of attempts to change the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem and impose an illegal fait accompli. It warned of the repercussions on the two-state solution and international efforts aimed at achieving a sustainable and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
Call to the international community
The Ministry called on the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to assume its legal, moral, and historical responsibilities and to take urgent action to stop measures aimed at entrenching a new illegal reality in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Position of the International League
For its part, the Muslim World League condemned the opening of the embassy, affirming that it contradicts the international position regarding the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and represents a violation of relevant international laws and resolutions. The League stressed its rejection of measures aimed at entrenching an illegal reality in the city or legitimizing any arrangements that contradict international law.
Regional context
Colombia opened its embassy in occupied Jerusalem today, Wednesday, becoming the tenth country to take this step, following the new Colombian president's ending of the rupture with Israel established by his predecessor in May 2024 in the wake of Israeli violations in the Gaza Strip.
