A poll conducted by the Associated Press and the Norc research center showed that a majority of American voters want to change the course of the country's administration, amid dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's performance, especially on economic and foreign policy files, weeks before the midterm congressional elections scheduled for November.
According to the poll, published by the agency, voters who identify themselves as Democrats are more enthusiastic about participating in the elections than Republicans, while about half of registered voters prefer Democrats to control both houses of Congress, compared to about four in ten who prefer continued Republican control.
Economy and Cost of Living Take Precedence
The poll showed that about eight in ten voters consider the economy or cost of living among the most prominent issues that will affect their voting choices, while about two-thirds see healthcare and the war with Iran as important issues as well. About 80 percent of voters expressed dissatisfaction with Trump's handling of the rising cost of living, and even among Republicans, the approval rating of his performance on the cost of living file did not exceed 44 percent.
Desire for Change and Criticism of Performance
The poll indicated that about half of voters want a fundamental change in the way the country is managed, while nearly three in ten want a comprehensive change. This desire extends to a segment of Republican voters, with 45 percent saying they want a fundamental change and 13 percent saying they want a comprehensive change. In foreign policy, the poll showed that 69 percent of Republican voters support Trump's performance, amid the ongoing war with Iran, despite his previous pledges that it would be of limited duration.
Democrats Do Not Enjoy Broad Support
Despite the decline in satisfaction with Trump's performance, the Democratic Party does not enjoy broad support, as about half of voters view it negatively, a ratio that approximates voters' view of the Republican Party, but independent voters tend to have a more negative view of Republicans than Democrats, according to the poll results. The poll included 1,119 American adults, including 925 registered voters, and was conducted between October 8 and 12, with a margin of error for registered voters of 4.2 percentage points.
A poll conducted by the independent company BF Global for the American magazine Politico on October 9 revealed that about a quarter of voters who support Trump believe that Republican candidates should distance themselves from him to win the midterm elections, indicating growing concerns within the party about the electoral implications of the president's policies.
