Apple announced the development of a new tool that allows inspecting iPhones and verifying their integrity while they are inside their sealed packaging, aiming to reduce fraud related to device returns and minimize the need to open boxes before resale.
The tech website Digital Trends reported on Sunday that the new tool relies on the "Presto" system developed by Apple, with inspection devices beginning to reach company stores in October.
This step comes to counter fraud involving the return of iPhone packaging after removing the phone or some of its components, which forces store employees to open boxes and verify contents before accepting returns or reselling them.
The new tool allows diagnostic tests to be performed on the phone inside its sealed box without the need to open it, which may help speed up inspection processes and preserve sealed packaging for healthy devices prepared for resale.
Apple originally developed the "Presto" system to update iPhones and prepare them with necessary software wirelessly before they reach buyers, allowing system updates to be installed and devices activated while inside their packaging, then turned off again.
The new use expands the system's scope to include inspecting devices returned to stores and verifying their integrity, although the company has not disclosed details of all tests the tool can perform or the types of malfunctions and tampering it can detect.
The technology is expected to help improve store inventory management and reduce procedures required to inspect returned devices, but it does not necessarily mean the ability to detect all forms of fraud or guarantee the integrity of every sealed box.
