Asia Cup sees postponements and schedule changes for its 2027 edition
The Asian Football Confederation postpones the 2027 Asia Cup to December 2027 due to logistical challenges.

The Asian national teams championship has seen fundamental changes to its schedule, most notably the postponement of the 2027 edition hosted by Saudi Arabia, where the competition dates moved from January 2027 to December 2027, a move reflecting the impact of logistical circumstances on sports schedules.

Postponement of the 2027 edition for Saudi Arabia

The Asian Football Confederation announced on Tuesday the rescheduling of the competitions originally set to be played from January 7 to February 5, 2027, to instead take place between December 23, 2027, and January 21, 2028. The decision came after consultations with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and the local organizing committee, amid exceptional circumstances related to developments in the region and the associated logistical complexities and disruptions in travel and movement.

It was noted that the new dates will be submitted to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for approval, making this the first edition hosted by Saudi Arabia in its history following these time adjustments.

The 2023 experience and the move to Qatar

The 18th edition, known as the 2023 Asia Cup, was the first to see a change in its date in recent years. It was originally scheduled to be hosted by China from June 16 to July 16, 2023. In May 2022, China announced its inability to organize the tournament amid the exceptional circumstances imposed by the "corona" pandemic and the "zero COVID" policy.

After the bidding process opened, the Asian Football Confederation selected Qatar to host it in October 2022, moving the competitions to the period from January 12 to February 10, 2024, to avoid high temperatures in the Gulf region during the summer months, while retaining the name of the 2023 edition despite being played the following year.

Previous facts and global postponements

The Asia Cup had a different incident in the 2007 edition, when the Asian Football Confederation decided to advance the tournament by one year to be held in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, instead of 2008, to avoid conflict with other tournaments such as the European Championship and the Olympic Games.

Changes were not limited to the Asian continent; the UEFA Euro 2020 and Copa America 2020 were postponed to 2021 due to the "corona" pandemic, the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 was postponed to January 2022, and the 2023 edition of the African tournament was moved to January 2024 due to the rainy season in Côte d'Ivoire, with the 2025 edition taking place from December 2025 to January 2026 after the international calendar was rearranged.
