Atomic Energy Authority Discusses Equipping Aleppo Cyclotron Project with IBA
Syrian Atomic Energy Authority explores technical specifications for the Hope Rays initiative's cyclotron project in Aleppo.

A delegation from the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority, led by Authority Head Mider Al-Aqleh, visited the headquarters of the global company IBA in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss the technical specifications of the particle accelerator (cyclotron) system planned for construction in Aleppo Governorate, as part of the "Hope Rays" initiative.

Al-Aqleh discussed during the visit the technical requirements and equipment necessary for the project, which aims to produce isotopes and radioactive preparations used in the early diagnosis and treatment of cancer tumors, and to secure them for areas in northern and northeastern Syria, thereby supporting the health system and providing these advanced examinations and treatments locally, in addition to reducing the burdens of travel and treatment for patients.

Al-Aqleh emphasized to SANA today, Tuesday, that progress in discussing the technical specifications of the cyclotron system in Aleppo constitutes a qualitative and strategic leap towards achieving self-sufficiency in medical radioactive isotopes in northern Syria areas, enabling early diagnosis and providing high-precision treatment for cancer patients.

He clarified that the project integrates with a package of efforts recently implemented under the "Hope Rays" initiative, primarily supplying the latest specialized medical imaging devices to Aleppo and Idlib University Hospitals, and activating the local radiation therapy system at Al-Biruni University Hospital in Damascus, which enhances the capabilities of national hospitals and expands the scope of providing the best advanced medical care services.

The Atomic Energy Authority, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, opened the local radiation therapy system at Al-Biruni Hospital in the Mawasat Medical Complex in Damascus on July 14 last year. This technology is used to target cancer cells and reduce tumors, in a step aimed at developing radiation therapy services and enhancing the potential of the health and scientific research sectors.

The company IBA, headquartered in Leuven-La-Neuve, Belgium, is one of the global leading companies in particle accelerator technology, and is also among the most prominent suppliers of equipment and services in the field of proton therapy, which is classified as an advanced technology in the radiation treatment of cancer tumors.
