Atomic Energy Authority Enhances Radiation Safety System Through Six Specialized Directorates
The Syrian Atomic Energy Authority strengthens radiation safety and environmental protection via six specialized scientific directorates.

The Prevention and Safety Department at the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority is working to enhance the radiation safety system and ensure the safe use of nuclear and radiation technologies through six specialized scientific directorates. The Authority's Media Office clarified in a statement to SANA on Monday that the department includes the Human Protection Directorate, the Radiation Calibration Directorate, the Radiation Measurements Directorate, the Environmental Protection and Radiation Decontamination Directorate, the Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Directorate, and the Technical and Radiation Services Directorate. Their tasks are integrated to provide a scientific and practical system that supports prevention and safety requirements in various medical, industrial, and research fields.

Human Protection and Radiation Dose Monitoring

It was indicated that the Human Protection Directorate is concerned with monitoring internal radiation doses received by workers in facilities and evaluating exposure levels, in addition to assessing radiation doses received by patients during medical imaging procedures. This contributes to supporting the responsible use of radiation in the health sector and enhancing prevention procedures for workers and patients, in accordance with radiation protection and safety requirements.

The Office clarified that the Radiation Calibration Directorate undertakes specialized technical and scientific work to ensure the accuracy of radiation measurement devices and the reliability of their results. It noted that the Directorate's work contributes to improving the quality of measurements used in medical, industrial, and research applications, and providing technical reference to ensure the validity and accuracy of results, in addition to supporting quality assurance applications in radiation therapy, which require high precision in dose determination and measurement.

Monitoring Facilities and Equipment

According to the Office, the Radiation Measurements Directorate works on measuring radiation activity levels and neutron flux in nuclear and radiation facilities and equipment, with the aim of providing accurate scientific data that helps evaluate operating conditions and verify safety requirements. It was indicated that these measurements constitute one of the basic tools for monitoring radiation conditions in facilities and determining radiation levels associated with the use of various sources and equipment.

The Office pointed out that the Environmental Protection and Radiation Decontamination Directorate is concerned with developing means of monitoring environmental pollutants and improving the efficiency of radiation monitoring and measurement. It also includes developing techniques for monitoring airborne particulates and improving their monitoring efficiency, along with providing the necessary standard materials for radiation analysis and measurement.

Protection of Heritage Assets

It was clarified that the Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection Directorate specializes in evaluating exposure levels to light and ultraviolet rays, studying their potential effects, and providing necessary scientific and technical recommendations to mitigate their risks. The applications of this field extend to protecting archaeological and heritage assets from harmful effects resulting from exposure to light and ultraviolet rays. Additionally, the Directorate's work includes providing specialized equipment and platforms to perform irradiation processes for research and service purposes.

The Office indicated that the Technical and Radiation Services Directorate offers a range of specialized services related to radiation protection and developing solutions and materials that contribute to reducing radon gas permeability. Radon is a naturally radioactive gas that can accumulate in some enclosed places. It was noted that these works gain importance in developing protection means and reducing radiation exposure by employing scientific research and technical applications to find solutions that contribute to improving safety levels.

The Office clarified that the work of the six directorates is integrated within the Prevention and Safety Department to form a specialized scientific and technical system. This system contributes to supporting medical, industrial, and research sectors by providing the necessary scientific data and technical services to improve the quality of nuclear and radiation applications and ensure their use within safety and security requirements. These efforts by the Prevention and Safety Department come within the role played by the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority in developing peaceful uses of nuclear energy and technologies, enhancing national scientific and technical capabilities, and consolidating a culture of prevention and safety. This aims to achieve a balance between benefiting from scientific and technological applications and protecting humans and the environment, in accordance with accepted international standards and practices.
