Australian Study: Achilles Tendon Injections Do Not Provide Long-Term Benefits
A Monash University study finds no clear additional benefit of Achilles tendon injections in pain relief and mobility after 12 months.

A clinical study showed that injections used to treat Achilles tendonopathy did not provide a clear additional benefit in pain relief and mobility improvement after 12 months, compared to placebo injections, indicating limited long-term therapeutic effect.

The scientific website Medical Xpress reported on Wednesday that researchers from Monash University in Australia evaluated the effectiveness of injections containing a saline solution and a local anesthetic, with the addition of an anti-inflammatory drug in some cases, for people suffering from Achilles tendonopathy. The study results were published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

The results showed that the injections did not provide a clear additional improvement in pain levels or mobility one year after treatment, despite some participants who received injections containing anti-inflammatories recording limited symptom improvement in the first few weeks, without this effect continuing in the long term.

Importance of Long-Term Evaluation

The results indicate that temporary symptom improvement does not necessarily mean achieving sustainable therapeutic benefit, highlighting the importance of evaluating treatments based on their long-term results, alongside following appropriate rehabilitation programs and therapeutic exercises for the patient's condition, and modifying activities that increase pressure on the tendon.

Nature of the Injury and Its Effects

The Achilles tendon is the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, contributing to walking, running, and climbing stairs. Repeated stress can lead to pain and stiffness, limiting mobility and the ability to perform daily activities.
