The Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in Idlib Governorate, in cooperation with the Lamset Hadara Association and the Directorate of Health in the governorate, organized today, Tuesday, an awareness seminar on breast cancer and the importance of early detection. The event was held at the Directorate of Social Affairs building, with the participation of approximately 15 women from the deaf and hard-of-hearing community and hearing women.

Importance of receiving treatment early

The Director of Social Affairs and Labor in Idlib, Ahlam Al-Rashid, clarified that the session included a number of women from the local community and Directorate employees, with the participation of a sign language interpreter and a specialist doctor from the Directorate of Health. The seminar covered the importance of women receiving treatment early and the locations of equipment for disease detection.

Al-Rashid pointed out that early detection protects women from reaching advanced stages of the disease, encouraging all women to undergo the examination, which she described as not frightening. She emphasized the importance of encouraging men to support women in undergoing screening and the necessity of spreading such sessions widely in society to ensure a healthy and sound community, noting the availability of specialized health centers in Idlib.

Right of the deaf and hard-of-hearing to have information translated into sign language

For her part, lawyer and sign language interpreter Maysa Barakat indicated that her role in the lecture was to translate the information presented by a doctor from the Directorate of Health into sign language. She noted that the beneficiaries were a mix of young deaf and hard-of-hearing girls and hearing participants, affirming that it is the natural right of the deaf and hard-of-hearing to receive this information translated into sign language.

For her part, Ghassoun Baath, one of the attendees from the deaf community, expressed her happiness at attending the lecture for the first time, noting that she gained information and awareness about breast cancer that she was previously unaware of. She expressed her joy at being integrated into society and at the presence of an interpreter who conveyed the information in sign language.

This seminar comes as part of a series of awareness activities implemented by the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in Idlib during Breast Cancer Awareness Month as part of the "Pink October" campaign, aiming to involve the most vulnerable categories in terms of information, primarily those with hearing disabilities, within the framework of the Directorate's approach towards comprehensive awareness.
