The American basketball team Sacramento Kings announced on Monday that Australian player Ben Simmons suffered a new injury during training, which will keep him out of play. The club's management stated that the player suffered a tear in his right Achilles tendon during a direct training maneuver on Sunday, a fact confirmed by MRI scans.
In the same context, the club's official statement indicated that Simmons will undergo urgent surgery, with a promise to provide further updates on his health condition as necessary. This injury comes as a new obstacle in the player's career, who missed last season due to recurring back problems, before signing a one-year contract with the Kings in September last year.
For his part, it is worth noting that 30-year-old Simmons was selected first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2016 NBA Draft, but he missed the 2016-2017 season due to a broken right foot. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2018, but his career was hindered by frequent injuries, especially with Philadelphia, where his relationship with the team ended in a tense manner in 2022.
He added that Simmons averaged 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game over eight seasons in the league. His last appearance in the league was in early 2025 when he played as a substitute for the Los Angeles Clippers, after he had moved to the Brooklyn Nets, where he suffered a decline in his performance before the club released him in 2025.
Statistics indicated that Simmons boosted clubs' interest in him last August after a strong training camp with the Australian national team. Meanwhile, the Kings ended last season with a record of 22 wins against 60 losses, and they have only reached the playoffs once since 2006, when they were eliminated by Golden State in the first round in 2023.
