Bolivia declares emergency to face El Niño repercussions
Bolivian president declares emergency to address droughts and floods caused by El Niño affecting thousands of families.

Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz declared a state of emergency in the country on Saturday evening, aiming to secure the necessary resources to face the repercussions of the El Niño climate phenomenon, amid worsening drought and flood waves and expanding damage in several regions.

Agence France-Presse quoted Paz as saying in a message to the nation: "The decree declaring the state of emergency allows for the deployment of more rescue teams in the most affected areas," calling for enhanced coordination among state institutions to face the phenomenon's repercussions.

Paz clarified that his country faces increasing climate challenges in the form of drought and flood waves, warning of the severity of their impacts and emphasizing the need to pool efforts among various institutions to deal with them and mitigate their repercussions.

In this context, a government report issued this week stated that drought affects approximately 78,000 families in six of Bolivia's nine departments, and has caused the death of more than 75,000 head of livestock.

The El Niño phenomenon affects atmospheric circulation patterns, leading to changes in the distribution of climate phenomena, including a decrease in hurricane formation in the Atlantic Ocean and enhanced activity in the Pacific Ocean.

The United Nations had previously warned that the current El Niño phenomenon could reach very strong levels, which may have wide-ranging climate repercussions affecting regions in Latin America, East and Southern Africa, Asia, and the Pacific region.
