Borders and Customs Authority Enhances Staff Skills in Plant and Animal Quarantine
The General Authority for Borders and Customs organizes a training program with Acsad to develop competencies in plant and animal quarantine near Damascus.

The General Authority for Borders and Customs, in cooperation with the Arab Center for Studies of Arid Lands and Dry Areas (Acsad), organized a training program aimed at improving the efficiency, knowledge, and skills of workers in the fields of plant and animal quarantine and related laboratory analyses.

The training program, held at the Center's headquarters in the Damascus countryside on October 13 and 14, under the title "Plant Quarantine," saw the participation of Dr. Abdo Muhammad Bashir, representing the General Authority for Borders and Customs, and Dr. Muhammad Nasri, representing Acsad.

Developing Capabilities of Border Staff

The Authority emphasized via its Telegram channel on Wednesday that this program is part of enhancing scientific and technical cooperation and developing the capabilities of staff working at border crossings, highlighting the importance of partnership between regulatory institutions and specialized scientific centers to exchange expertise and strengthen technical capacities.

The Authority pointed out its focus on qualifying technical staff and enabling them to handle field challenges, thereby contributing to the development of regulatory procedures, protecting plant and animal health, and improving performance efficiency at border crossings, while achieving a balance between regulatory requirements and the smooth flow of trade and transit.

Developing Institutional Work

The Authority highlighted the importance of investing in training and qualification as two fundamental pillars for developing institutional work, enhancing integration among relevant entities, and leveraging scientific and technical expertise to support the efficiency of the border control system.

The Arab Center for Studies of Arid Lands and Dry Areas (Acsad) was established in 1968, with its headquarters in Damascus. It is one of the specialized Arab organizations affiliated with the League of Arab States, working to conduct scientific research and transfer modern technologies in the fields of water and land resource management, livestock, and sustainable agricultural development, thereby contributing to addressing the impacts of climate change, desertification, and drought, and enhancing food and water security in Arab countries.
