A recent scientific study published in the journal "Molecular Systems Biology" has revealed the impact of some common sweeteners on the growth of gut bacteria, and how their interaction with certain medications can alter their effect on these bacteria. This highlights the importance of studying interactions between food additives and medications and their role in digestive health.
The science website "Science Daily" reported that researchers from the University of Cambridge tested 39 types of sweeteners and 25 types of gut bacteria. The results showed that about three-quarters of the sweeteners affected the growth of at least one type of bacteria in laboratory experiments. It was noted that the effect of sweeteners varies depending on the type of sweetener and the bacteria exposed to it.
Complex interactions with medications
Researchers tested the interactions of sweeteners with common compounds such as caffeine and vanillin, as well as eight medications. They observed more than 100 cases where the effect of sweeteners on bacterial growth changed, either by increasing or decreasing inhibition. This indicates that the effect of these compounds depends not only on their individual properties but is also influenced by the substances they are combined with.
Specific laboratory results
Among the notable findings, mixing the compound isosteviol, used in the food and beverage industry, with the antidepressant drug duloxetine, led in laboratory experiments to the inhibition of the growth of two types of gut bacteria: "Roseburia intestinalis" and "Parabacteroides merdae". This mixture also led to a decrease in microbial diversity in an artificial bacterial community.
Additional tests revealed changes in indicators related to inflammation and immune responses. However, researchers pointed out that the results do not prove that the same effects occur in humans, nor do they necessarily mean that consuming these substances with medications leads to health damage.
Necessity for further studies
Researchers emphasized the need for additional studies to verify whether these interactions occur within the body and to determine their potential health effects. This will help in understanding the role of sweeteners within the complex interactions between food, medications, and gut microbes, especially since sweeteners are used in a wide range of food products and beverages, particularly low-sugar and low-calorie alternatives.
Scientific research context
In this context, studying the effects of sweeteners on gut bacteria and their potential interactions with medications is an important field of scientific research. This is due to the widespread use of these additives in daily consumer products, which calls for further scientific examinations to evaluate potential long-term risks and benefits.
