Burkina Faso officially cuts ties with France, accuses it of supporting terrorism
Ouagadougou ends era of French influence

In an unprecedented escalation, the government of Burkina Faso has officially and completely severed diplomatic relations with France, the former colonial power, accusing Paris of pursuing systematic and ongoing hostile policies aimed at undermining its supreme national interests.

This historic decision comes as the culmination of a long path of sharp tension and gradual rupture between the two countries, since the current military regime came to power in Ouagadougou, opening the door to a new phase of the reconfiguration of geopolitical alliances in the Sahel region.

Statement of diplomatic break

Burkina Faso's government spokesman, Bengdonwendy Gilbert Ouedraogo, confirmed in an official statement broadcast on state television that the decision to cut diplomatic relations came into effect immediately, indicating that this step comes in response to the ongoing French incitement against the state, and Paris' relentless pursuit of reviving "neo-colonial ambitions", as well as its involvement in providing military and active support to subversive and terrorist networks that are destabilizing the country.

The statement explained that this rupture is limited exclusively to "the institutional framework and diplomatic representation between the two countries", stressing that it does not in any way affect the deep historical, human, cultural and social ties that unite the Burkinabe and French peoples.

French response and denunciation of the "slippage"

In a swift reaction, the French Foreign Ministry described Ouagadougou's decision as "a hostile measure that is completely untrue and is not based on any facts on the ground."

Paris said this position clearly reflects the "worrying and dangerous slide" of Burkina Faso's ruling military authorities towards its traditional international partners, while stressing that French political and diplomatic circles are currently studying "the necessary measures and mutual responses" to deal with the consequences of this exclusionary declaration.

Captain Traoré's Transformations

Captain Brahim Traoré, who assumed absolute power following a successful military coup in September 2022, is leading a tough political orientation characterized by clear hostility to the Western system, specifically France, while imposing restrictive measures against critical local voices.

In exchange for cutting bridges with Paris, the Traoré regime has rapidly strengthened its military and strategic ties with Russia, which has become the country's most prominent ally in the face of armed groups. The decision to cut ties paved the way for the rapid and complete suspension of all diplomatic activities and missions between the two countries, after Ouagadougou refused since 2023 to appoint a new French envoy and demanded the departure of the former ambassador, in addition to banning the broadcast of the French television channel "TV5 Monde" on charges of spreading disinformation and glorifying terrorism.

The Collapse of the French Trusteeship's Legacy

This dramatic shift is part of a rising wave of anti-French sentiment in its former West and Central African colonies, whose geography has become the scene of heated international conflict and sharp tensions amid growing Russian and Chinese influence.

Despite repeated pledges by successive French administrations to abandon the so-called "Françafrique" tutelage strategy – through which French-speaking countries have been dominated by networks of political interests, monopolistic commercial privileges, and opaque financial arrangements implicated in corruption – Paris' repeated military interventions since the 1960s have accelerated the collapse of its political capital, with Burkina Faso following in the footsteps of its neighbors Mali and Niger in expelling the French presence from its territory entirely.

Burkina Faso is the latest in a series of African insurgencies against traditional French influence in the Sahel, where the country has been living for years under the weight of intense activity by armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS, a security failure that military elites have invoked to carry out coups and shift the diplomatic compass toward Moscow.

This official rupture comes as a new severe blow to France's security and political approach in the African continent, and establishes a new regional axis that disavows the legacy of old colonialism and seeks alternative military partnerships to confront the deterioration of the field and economic conditions.
