China has called for breaking the political deadlock in Libya as soon as possible, considering the "4+4" agreement reached with UN facilitation as a significant step forward in implementing the country's political roadmap.
Xinhua Agency quoted Sun Li, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, as saying during a session of the UN Security Council yesterday Wednesday that the agreement represents a step toward unifying Libyan institutions and creating conditions for holding national elections and completing the political transition process, stressing that its implementation requires support from all Libyan parties.
Sun emphasized the necessity that international efforts be based on the principle of Libyan leadership of the political process, away from imposing external solutions, warning that any new armed conflict could undermine trust between parties and hinder political efforts.
He pointed to the continuation of attacks on vital facilities in western Libya and escalating security tensions, calling on concerned parties to stop attacks and avoid any steps that could increase tensions, while stressing the importance of unifying military and security institutions and ensuring the smooth conduct of elections and transfer of power.
The Chinese official renewed his country's readiness to continue cooperation with Libyan parties and the international community to help achieve lasting peace and stability in Libya.
The "4+4" agreement is considered a Libyan political understanding signed on August 30, 2026, under the patronage of the UN Support Mission in Libya, outlining steps to address electoral and institutional differences, with the aim of reaching national elections and unifying Libyan state institutions.
