China Develops AI Models to Warn of Extreme Weather Phenomena
China unveils first batch of AI models for monitoring and warning of extreme weather within Fengyun satellite system.

China has unveiled the first batch of artificial intelligence models specialized in monitoring and warning of extreme weather phenomena, as part of the Fengyun meteorological satellite system, during a user conference held last Thursday in the city of Changsha, Hunan province in central China.

For its part, Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday that the China Meteorological Administration clarified that the new models include one for analyzing hurricane clouds and another for immediate warning of weather phenomena resulting from severe convection, thereby enhancing the capabilities of satellites to monitor, predict, and forecast hurricanes and severe storms.

The Administration noted that the hurricane cloud analysis model can automatically identify the location, structure, intensity, and development of hurricanes, perform analyses every 15 minutes, and generate interpretive reports within 27 seconds. Meanwhile, the immediate warning model uses observation data collected by the Fengyun-4 satellite during the previous two hours to predict cloud development and identify areas exposed to severe weather, providing an early warning of up to four hours.

The Administration indicated that China currently has ten Fengyun meteorological satellites in orbit, making their data available to 141 countries and regions. These satellites form an essential part of China's meteorological monitoring system, as the application of artificial intelligence in analyzing massive climate data and improving the accuracy of forecasting extreme weather phenomena continues to grow.

It added that China launched six new remote sensing satellites on October 24 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the northwest of the country, successfully placing them into their orbits.
