The Chinese company Deep Robotics, specializing in the development and manufacturing of intelligent robots, tested humanoid robots of the "DR02" model on the streets of Hangzhou to help regulate traffic, raise awareness among road users, and guide tourists, as part of employing robotics technologies in public services and enhancing traffic safety.
The website "Interesting Engineering," specializing in technology and engineering news, reported on Tuesday that field tests were conducted in early October in the West Lake area and the Shishi National Wetland Park, where the robots helped direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic, especially during periods of congestion and rain.
The website clarified that the robots can alert cyclists to crossing stop lines, remind them to wear helmets, and announce changes in traffic signals using audio alerts and gestures, without issuing violations or imposing fines. The robots stand approximately 175 centimeters tall and weigh 65 kilograms. They are also capable of resisting dust and water and operating in various weather conditions. Cameras and sensors allow them to detect people, vehicles, and surrounding obstacles.
The robots' tasks are not limited to traffic management; they can also help tourists reach their destinations, answer basic inquiries in multiple languages, and manage visitor flow in crowded tourist sites. These experiments fall within the expansion of using robots in urban services, while field tests allow for evaluating their ability to handle different situations and interact safely and effectively with humans.
