Civil Defense teams in Syria carried out more than 300 field responses during the 28th and 29th of October to confront the repercussions of heavy rainfall and floods that affected several governorates. The number of reports received by the teams exceeded 450, which were handled according to priority order, giving precedence to life-threatening cases, with the support of engineering machinery and relevant authorities.
Rescuing trapped individuals and evacuating families
The response operations resulted in the rescue of 50 people who were trapped due to floods and vehicle skidding, as well as the rescue of families stranded by water in the Ksra Surour area in the countryside of Raqqa following the collapse of an earthen bridge, where the number of affected families in the area exceeded 100. In the context of preventive interventions, approximately 375 families left the Sahl al-Banat, Yonan, and Maqsah camps, as the teams worked to secure roads and facilitate family movement to mitigate risks.
Collapse of culverts and water drainage
Rain and floods caused the collapse of seven culverts on wadis and dirt roads, leading to a disruption of traffic through them. Interventions included removing rocks, soil, and fallen trees that hindered movement and closed roads in areas of the countryside of Damascus, Aleppo, Tartous, Daraa, and Deir Ezzor, along with responding to approximately 42 stuck vehicles in various areas.
Casualties and warnings
Human casualties recorded five deaths, including four children who drowned in water pools in the villages of Haneida in the western countryside of Raqqa, Abu Haya in the northern countryside of Raqqa, and Hammar Al-Ali in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor, while a civilian died near the Salmiyah Bridge in the western countryside of Raqqa. Reports also recorded seven injuries and the disappearance of five others, with atmospheric disturbances expected to continue until the dawn of Saturday, October 31, with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
