The Civil Defense teams in the Emergency Management and Disaster Administration in Latakia province evacuated students from the secondary and preparatory school in the town of Salma in the countryside of the province today, Tuesday, after receiving a report indicating the presence of unexploded war remnants near the site, in order to ensure the safety of students and in accordance with procedures to secure the location and dispose of dangerous ammunition.
Ali Qiqouni, the director of the Government Communications Department in the Directorate, explained that teams went to the site with participation from awareness, technical survey, and non-technical survey teams, as well as war remnants removal teams. It was confirmed that unexploded ordnance was present, and warning signs and tape were placed to prevent people from approaching the area. Qiqouni noted that teams safely evacuated the students and sent them home, while the awareness team provided students with guidance on proper conduct when finding war remnants, emphasizing staying away and reporting to adults.
He clarified that the war remnants and unexploded ordnance removal team began dealing with the ordnance and disposing of it through detonation, taking necessary measures to secure the area. Qiqouni pointed out that Civil Defense teams continue to respond to reports regarding war remnants left by the fallen regime during the years of the revolution, carrying out technical and non-technical surveys of areas, alongside awareness programs and field visits, especially as residents continue to return to their areas after liberation.
War remnants and unexploded ordnance pose a danger to the lives of civilians, especially children. Civil Defense teams continue to carry out survey and detection operations for these remnants and deal with them in parallel with community awareness activities regarding the dangers of approaching them and the necessity of reporting to competent authorities.
