Civil Defense teams in the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management in Al-Hasakah Governorate began implementing proactive measures today, Thursday, to mitigate the risks of rising levels in the Khabur River, coinciding with the rainfall the region is experiencing and the resulting water accumulations and floods in several locations.

Water drainage works at the bridge

Abdul Halim Shahab, Director of the Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management in Al-Hasakah, told SANA that the measures included opening passages and channels designated for water drainage at Al-Beruti Bridge, aiming to alleviate pressure caused by the rising river levels and limit the risks of water accumulation. He noted that carrying out the works requires completely cutting off traffic on the bridge until completion.

Directives for citizens

Shahab called on citizens and drivers to comply with the directives of the competent authorities and use alternative routes, amid ongoing field operations aimed at ensuring citizen safety and reducing potential damages resulting from the sudden rise in water levels.

Field responses in affected areas

He pointed out that Civil Defense teams carried out field responses over the past 24 hours to deal with the repercussions of rainfall, which included pumping out accumulated rainwater from homes in Al-Matar neighborhood in Al-Hasakah city, as well as pumping out floodwaters that inundated parts of service facilities at Ra's al-Ayn Hospital.

Protecting vital facilities

The pumping operations were carried out to protect technical equipment and electrical generators, and to ensure the continuity of their operation and medical services, amid the difficult weather conditions the region is witnessing. The Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raad al-Saleh, had called on Wednesday, yesterday, residents of Raqqa, Deir Ezzor, and Al-Hasakah governorates to remain at home and not leave except for necessity.

Public safety tips

The minister emphasized paying attention to the safety of children, avoiding low-lying areas and flood channels, and not risking crossing any flood or watercourse, within the framework of general directives to mitigate risks resulting from floods.
