Civil Defense teams in Deir Ezzor responded to appeals from residents of Al-Kabr town in eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, following floods that swept through the town due to heavy rainfall. They worked to open damaged roads and help residents reach their homes, amid calls for a permanent solution to the recurring problem of rainwater accumulation every winter.
Abdullah Khalaf, director of the operations center at the Deir Ezzor Directorate of Emergency and Disaster Management, told SANA on Sunday that teams are implementing an emergency response plan launched by the directorate to address the consequences of recent weather conditions, carrying out operations in the town in cooperation with the Red Crescent and under provincial supervision.
The operations included laying gravel in some of the 20 homes that suffered total damage and were surrounded by water, as well as approximately 100 homes with partial damage. Khalaf added that teams reinforced a vital road leading to one of the town’s neighborhoods yesterday to facilitate residents’ movement and enable them to enter and exit.
Resident Muzaffar Al-Jarjeb stated that the town experienced floods and inundations over the past two days, submerging large areas of homes, causing some to collapse and others to crack. Several residents were forced to evacuate as water levels reached about two meters. He called for a permanent solution to protect the town from recurring suffering during winter.
For his part, resident Abdul Fadel urged the construction of drainage channels to divert rainwater to the Euphrates Dam, preventing accumulation between homes and in town squares, and reducing damage to residents and their property during each rainy season. Over the past two days, Deir Ezzor province experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by hail and strong downdraft winds, causing floods, flash floods, flowing wadis, and the closure of several main and secondary roads.
