Closing of Polling Stations Across the United States
Voting in the US midterm elections has ended after polls closed in all states, from Indiana to Alaska.

Voting in the US midterm elections has concluded in all states, to renew part of the Senate seats and all House of Representatives seats. Voting start and end times varied between states, with Indiana and Kentucky being the first two states to close their polling stations and begin vote counting.

In the same context, polling stations closed in the states of Florida, Georgia, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Vermont, and Virginia starting at 19:00 Eastern US time (00:00 UTC). Polls subsequently closed in the following hours, starting from the Eastern states up to Alaska, where they closed at 06:00 UTC, thereby ending the voting process in all states.

Election Details

American voters went to the polls on Tuesday to elect governors in 36 states and other local officials, alongside electing all 435 members of the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 members of the Senate. Under the US electoral system, all House of Representatives seats are up for election every two years, coinciding with the presidential election once and with the midterm elections another time.

Seat Distribution

As for the Senate, which comprises 100 members elected for six-year terms, about one-third of its seats are renewed every two years. Before Tuesday's voting, Republicans held 53 seats in the Senate, compared to 45 for the Democrats, while two independents held the remaining seats and allied with the Democrats.

In the House of Representatives, Republicans held 218 seats before the voting, Democrats held 214, and independents held one seat, while two seats were vacant.
