World Athletics President Sebastian Coe confirmed on Wednesday that hosting the 2029 World Championships in Kenya constitutes an important opportunity to help combat the spreading scourge of doping among athletes in the African country.
In this context, Kenya, which is one of the major countries in global athletics, faces an increase in doping cases in recent years, despite earning the honor of hosting the championship as the first African country to do so. More than 100 Kenyan athletes are currently suspended, including a positive case announced by the Athletics Integrity Unit.
For his part, Coe said during a press meeting in Nairobi that the championship will enhance focus on this issue, emphasizing that the Integrity Unit is reporting clear progress, but he noted that work started from a distant point. Kenya ranked second in the overall standings at the Tokyo 2025 Championships behind the United States, winning 11 medals.
Coe added that he spoke to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and current President William Ruto, affirming that athletics integrity is a major national priority. He pointed out that the Kenyan government has increased funding for anti-doping efforts, expecting greater progress compared to 2015.
