A medical team in the Department of Cardiac Diseases and Surgery at Tartus National Hospital successfully performed a complex emergency surgery to replace the ascending aorta and aortic arch in a 62-year-old female patient, following her diagnosis with an acute aortic dissection that extended to large parts of the artery. The patient was discharged from the hospital after several days in good general condition.
Dr. Mohammad Ali, head of the Department of Cardiac Diseases and Surgery at the hospital, stated in an interview with SANA on Friday that medical examinations revealed the patient suffered from an acute aortic dissection involving the ascending aorta, aortic arch, carotid arteries, and the thoracic and abdominal descending aorta. This necessitated emergency surgical intervention to replace the ascending aorta and aortic arch, along with taking necessary measures to maintain cerebral blood perfusion and minimize the risk of brain injury during the procedure.
Ali explained that replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic arch is performed in specific pathological conditions, such as aortic aneurysm, when the condition requires surgical intervention to reduce the risks of dissection or rupture and their potential serious complications, such as bleeding into the pericardial cavity and pressure on the heart, which can lead to what is known as cardiac tamponade.
Ali noted that the procedure involves replacing the affected part of the aorta with a synthetic tube made of Dacron material, aiming to restore normal blood flow. He clarified that the danger of such surgeries lies in the possibility of severe bleeding or brain injury, especially when the dissection involves the aortic arch and its branches.
Ali emphasized that the success of this operation reflects the advancement in the level of cardiac surgery and medical services, as well as the efforts made by those in charge of the health sector to improve healthcare standards. Acute aortic dissection cases are considered serious medical emergencies requiring rapid and specialized intervention, along with intensive care after surgery.
It is worth noting that Tartus National Hospital has recorded a number of specialized medical procedures in the recent past, reflecting the development of its work and the improvement of its service levels.
