Conclusion of a Training Workshop in Tartus to Enhance Leishmaniasis Diagnosis
A three-day workshop in Tartus concluded to strengthen health staff's diagnostic and treatment capabilities for leishmaniasis.

A three-day training workshop on leishmaniasis concluded today, Thursday, in the city of Tartus, with the aim of enhancing the capabilities of health staff in diagnosis and treatment, and introducing the latest treatment methods, thereby contributing to improving recovery outcomes and reducing disease complications.

Dr. Atef Al-Taweel, Director of the Leishmaniasis and Malaria Control Program at the Ministry of Health, clarified that the workshop focused on raising the efficiency of workers in clinical diagnosis and enhancing their knowledge of laboratory diagnosis, helping them make appropriate treatment decisions for each case according to the nature of the infection.

Al-Taweel noted that the training included developing the skills of resident dermatologists in using modern treatment methods, particularly local injections and cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 196 degrees Celsius below zero, explaining that these methods contribute to improving treatment results and reducing skin scarring.

Al-Taweel pointed out that the program faces challenges related to environmental factors that facilitate the spread of the disease, despite the availability of drugs, emphasizing the importance of cooperation between relevant authorities to regularly transport household waste, handle animal waste safely, and improve the state of sewage, especially open sewage, to limit the reproduction of the insect vector of the disease.

For her part, Dr. Suzanna Haddad, Director of the Leishmaniasis and Malaria Center at the Tartus Health Directorate, clarified that the workshop targeted approximately 35 trainees from seven centers, in addition to resident dermatologists at the National Hospital, stating that the training focused on enhancing participants' skills in early detection, diagnosis, and selection of appropriate treatment methods.

Haddad emphasized that developing the expertise of health staff contributes to improving the quality of medical services provided to patients, reducing relapse cases, and accelerating recovery. The workshop comes within the framework of enhancing medical expertise in dealing with leishmaniasis, alongside addressing environmental factors that contribute to its spread.
