Court Sentences Abd al-Jabbar Arziq to Life Imprisonment
Member of militia linked to Iranian Revolutionary Guard convicted of war crimes in Damascus.

The specialized court in Damascus issued a life imprisonment sentence against the accused Abd al-Jabbar Ghazi Arziq, affiliated with the Quds Brigade militia linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, after convicting him of joining an armed gang whose goal was to incite civil war, sectarian fighting, and the invasion of cities. According to the legal characterization in the ruling, these acts were linked to war crimes and crimes against humanity, due to their connection with crimes committed systematically and on a large scale under the ousted regime.

For his part, Radif Mustafa, director of the Accountability and Justice Administration at the National Authority for Transitional Justice, clarified that the gravity and seriousness of the acts, and their representation as an assault on civilians and a threat to social peace, were the main considerations on which the court based its ruling. He confirmed that the ruling did not grant the accused any mitigating circumstances, and deprived him of benefiting from general or special amnesty, according to the text of the ruling issued today, Wednesday.

In the same context, Mustafa pointed out that this ruling confirms that serious crimes do not expire due to political statute of limitations or changing circumstances, and that the path of accountability and justice is based on facts, evidence, and judicial procedures. He called on the Accountability and Justice Administration, which continues its work on following up files related to violations, for anyone with relevant information or evidence to submit it through the official channels approved by the Authority, which contributes to supporting the path of uncovering the truth and accountability.

Mustafa emphasized that justice is not achieved merely by issuing rulings, but by continuing the work to uncover the truth and hold officials accountable according to the law, and ensuring the rights of victims and preventing the recurrence of crimes suffered by Syrians. The president of the Fourth Specialized Criminal Court for Transitional Justice, Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan, had confirmed last Thursday that the court is currently reviewing approximately 61 cases related to crimes and violations committed by the ousted regime during the years of the Syrian revolution.
