Culture Minister: 80% Completion of Al-Zahrawi Palace Restoration in Homs
Culture Minister confirms 80% progress in restoring the historic Al-Zahrawi Palace in Homs, with cultural events expected in three months.

Restoration Progress

Restoration works at the historic Al-Zahrawi Palace in Homs are ongoing, reaching approximately 80% completion, paving the way for its final rehabilitation and return to its cultural role. It is expected to be ready to host events within three months, according to Culture Minister Mohammed Yassin Al-Saleh during a tour of the palace on Tuesday.

Minister Al-Saleh clarified that the project aims to preserve the building's architectural authenticity and its historical and archaeological value. He noted that the palace will host events organized by the Ministry of Culture, the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, the Homs Governorate, and the local community, as well as activities organized by the investor in accordance with the signed agreement.

Project Details and Financing

Minister Al-Saleh pointed out that the investor donated 6 billion old Syrian pounds for the palace's restoration. He emphasized that the project followed a study and review of the submitted offer by relevant authorities, and that works are being carried out under the supervision of the Homs Governorate, the Ministry of Culture, and the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums.

The Minister stressed the importance of relying on official documents and reports regarding the contract and restoration works, noting that explanatory statements have been issued by the competent authorities on the matter.

Scope of Artistic Works

For his part, Hussam Hamish, head of the Antiquities and Museums Department in Homs, clarified that restoration works are limited to rehabilitating the building and preserving its architectural elements, without demolishing or rebuilding walls.

Hamish explained that the works included repairing faults in the fresh water and sewage networks, addressing leaks that affected the building's floor, removing previous encroachments, and treating moisture effects, wooden interferences, and colors that impacted its appearance.

He added that restoration and rehabilitation works are expected to move to the historic Dar Mufid Al-Amin in Homs, where efforts will focus on restoring the building, securing it, and preserving its heritage elements without dismantling and rebuilding its parts.

Historical Value of the Palace

The Al-Zahrawi Palace, located in the Al-Hamidiya district of Homs, dates back to 661 AH, corresponding to 1262-1263 AD. It comprises two main sections, the oldest of which dates to the Mamluk era, while the southern section saw architectural additions during the Ottoman period.

The palace is distinguished by its inner courtyard, its dome-shaped Iwan with muqarnas, as well as stone carvings featuring the emblem of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Zahir Baybars.
