The Damascus Directorate of Culture, in cooperation with the Rushd Foundation for Social Development, opened the first reading room and a reading corner in cultural centers after liberation today, Thursday, at the Arab Cultural Center in the Kafr Soussa district. This step comes within the framework of a plan aimed at activating cultural centers and enhancing knowledge dissemination in the city.
Mahmoud Maadnali, head of the Cultural Relations Department at the Directorate, emphasized that the initiative aims to consolidate the culture of reading and encourage younger generations to acquire knowledge, noting the effort to generalize the experience across various cultural centers in the city. He added that the room and corner are not limited to providing a place for reading, but aim to launch initiatives and activities that raise awareness and contribute to building a reading community.
For his part, Talal Najiba, director of the Kafr Soussa Cultural Center, clarified that restoring the true role of cultural centers starts from two integrated paths: rehabilitating the space and building human capital. He explained that the room provides a suitable environment for students to conduct research, while the reading corner allows utilizing waiting times for reading, stressing that the center aspires to be an open space for intellectual initiatives.
Mohammed Zuhair Aqleh, representative of the Rushd Foundation for Social Development, highlighted the role of centers in training and community reinforcement by providing a safe environment, noting that attention to reading is a core aspect of children and youth activities. On the sidelines of the opening, Mohammed Khair Al-Khayyat, head of the Libraries Department, presented an introductory presentation on the "Revival of Public Libraries" project, explaining that the project relies on developing infrastructure and organizing library collections.
Al-Khayyat explained in a statement to SANA that the room was equipped with tables and internet service to support scientific research and encourage knowledge production for all age groups. University student Sami Nassar also expressed the importance of the initiative for supporting students, given the center's proximity to residential neighborhoods and the university, which provides a quiet environment for study.
