Damascus’ Fourth Criminal Court, specialized in transitional justice, continued its public and in-person sessions on Monday to try the three defendants: Abdul Jabbar Zareeq, Ibrahim Muhammad al-Fa’ouri, and Adnan al-Aboud.
The National Authority for Transitional Justice clarified that the Public Prosecution requested the maximum penalties for Abdul Jabbar Zareeq, who denied the charges and pleaded for clemency, while the court postponed the session to October 28. In the case of Ibrahim Muhammad al-Fa’ouri, the court heard testimony from a witness and a plaintiff, and decided to postpone the session to the same date for the prosecution and defense.
Details of Charges and Trials
The indictment against Zareeq included joining the "Jerusalem Brigade" and participating in killing, looting, and displacement, while al-Fa’ouri is being tried for intentional homicide against Muhammad Ismail and Anas Al-Hariri. Adnan al-Aboud faces charges of kidnapping and torture leading to death; he denied the charges, and the wife and daughter of the victim, Nasser Abu Awn, attended the session.
Postponement of Sessions
The court decided to postpone al-Aboud’s session to November 2 to complete hearing public interest witnesses. The court held 19 judicial sessions last Monday, October 19, covering files of numerous defendants accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Case Background
These sessions follow allegations of violations against civilians during the rule of the former regime, with the court continuing to review files and cases related to these crimes over the past week.
