The Damascus Governorate is launching comprehensive rehabilitation and beautification works for Marjeh Square in the heart of the capital, aiming to transform it into an open space that combines aesthetic and functional dimensions, and to restore its pivotal role in commercial and social life.
The project includes artistic and structural works, most notably cleaning the bronze and stone monument in the center of the square, creating a small lake around it, as well as cleaning the walls of internal river channels and rehabilitating lakes and fountains according to a modern operating system.
The works also include developing green spaces and planting trees, installing an external fence equipped with aesthetic lighting, implementing two new lighting and irrigation networks, along with maintaining wells and inspecting structural elements to ensure site safety.
The project supervisor, Osama Khatkar, confirmed that the works include rehabilitating and beautifying the buildings surrounding the square to give the area a visual unity appropriate to its vital location, and enhancing the square's presence in Damascus's urban landscape.
The project comes within the framework of the governorate's plan to rehabilitate public squares and improve their operational efficiency, as part of the "Damascus Green and Will Remain Green" campaign, under which the Directorate of Gardens planted summer annuals at Umayyad Square last August.
