The National University Hospital in Damascus performed the first surgery of its kind in public hospitals, implanting an artificial urinary sphincter in a patient in his seventies who had suffered from permanent urinary incontinence for over 12 years.
Ibrahim Al-Barghouti, head of the Urology Department and Surgery Section at the National University Hospital in Damascus, explained that the patient underwent prostate clearance surgery 12 years ago, which led to him suffering from urinary incontinence day and night, with complete failure of the external and internal sphincters.
Al-Barghouti added that after conducting the necessary tests, imaging, and endoscopy for the patient, it was found that the urinary tract was healthy but there was complete failure of the sphincter. Consequently, a surgery to implant a European-made artificial sphincter was performed, and the operation was completely successful.
For his part, Anas Saad, a urological surgery specialist and supervisor in the Urology Department, stated that the artificial sphincter was implanted via an anal incision using the latest global techniques, ending the patient's 12-year ordeal.
Al-Barghouti noted that the patient is in good condition and is in the recovery period in the urology ward, with plans to evaluate the results one month after the surgical procedure.
Earlier, on the 7th of the current month, the National University Hospital in Damascus announced that the Syrian Association for Dialysis Access (Sada) performed the first HeRO Graft surgery in Syria, to provide vascular access for dialysis patients.
