The Damascus Waqf Directorate held the second lecture of its bi-monthly intellectual and scientific series "Great Figures of the Nation" on Tuesday evening, titled "Sheikh al-Islam Imam al-Nawawi," at Al-Iman Mosque in the Al-Mazraa district of Damascus.
This series is organized within a bi-monthly program aimed at reinforcing the concept of role models and highlighting intellectual figures, by hosting prominent scholars of the Levant to provide in-depth readings on each scholar's legacy and biography, honoring their contributions that enriched the scientific history of the Levant.
Milestones in Imam al-Nawawi's Life
The lecture, moderated by Sheikh Abdul Rahim Yousifan, focused on the scientific milestones of Imam al-Nawawi's life, his biography, circumstances, and stances, as well as his scientific and educational legacy and encyclopedic works, with the participation of Sheikh Muhammad Naim al-Arqsousi, member of the Higher Council of Fatwa, Sheikh Muti al-Batin, Sheikh Muhammad Nadir Maktabi, and Sheikh Abdul Hadi al-Bustani.
Restoring Damascus's Scientific Status
Sheikh Thaer Hanano, head of the Mosques Affairs Department at the Damascus Waqf Directorate, emphasized that holding these meetings represents a practical message of restoring Damascus's status and leadership as a beacon hosting science and scholars, and a center of civilizational radiance that rejects division and enhances unifying human commonalities.
Hanano added that Damascus mosques are regaining their luster and historical role as platforms contributing to building social awareness, and reinforcing love and social solidarity, noting that these meetings come within the framework of the Islamic Discourse Unity Charter that unites hearts and unifies the word.
Uniting Hearts and Rejecting Division
For his part, the preacher and imam of Musa ibn Nusayr Mosque in Daraa, Sheikh Muti al-Batin, clarified that introducing the younger generation and youth to Imam al-Nawawi and his stances leaves a significant impact on uniting their hearts, stressing that the nation today needs unity and rejection of division more than ever.
Al-Batin pointed out that society needs to prioritize unifying commonalities and arranging priorities to serve unity of ranks, explaining that drawing inspiration from the stances of great scholars creates awareness that saves society from the dangers of discord and guides youth behavior towards responsible convergence and integration.
Introducing the Youth Generation to the Path of Scholars
For his part, Sheikh Abdul Hadi al-Bustani, imam of Yalboga Mosque in Damascus, confirmed that these seminars aim to introduce the youth generation and students of knowledge to the biographies and paths of scholars, based on balance, piety, and combining knowledge with action.
Sheikh al-Islam, the scholar and hadith memorizer Abu Zakariya Muhyi al-Din Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631–676 AH / 1233–1277 CE), is considered one of the most prominent figures of knowledge, Quran, hadith, and jurisprudence in the history of the Levant. He was born in the town of "Nawa" in Hawran before moving to Damascus, where he presided over "Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiya," leaving an encyclopedic legacy characterized by methodological rigor.
This lecture follows the program launched by the Mosques Affairs Department in mid-February, which complements the pillars of the "Islamic Discourse Unity" Charter launched by the Ministry of Waqf on February 16, which was officially adopted in the presence of more than 1,500 scholars across Syria.
