Workshops from the directorates of technical services, sanitation, and water resources in Daraa governorate have begun desilting and cleaning the bed of the Golden Valley in the town of Western Ghariya, alongside studying technical options to address the problem and mitigate its environmental impacts.
The head of the Western Ghariya town council, Engineer Mahmoud Al-Ghubaiti, stated in an interview with SANA on Sunday that the workshops began last week working to reduce stagnant water accumulations in the valley bed running through the town and to find appropriate solutions. He explained that technical workshops began desilting box culverts within the town to reduce standing water volumes, while the Water Resources Directorate took samples of the accumulated water for analysis and to study the possibility of using it for irrigating fodder crops.
Searching for sustainable solutions
Al-Ghubaiti indicated that the workshops from the three directorates prepared two studies and preliminary estimates to explore two options for addressing the problem; the first is establishing a treatment plant near the sewage outlet of Eastern Ghariya town, and the second is creating a main concrete sewage outlet with box culverts within the valley bed. For his part, Sheikh (village head) of Western Ghariya, Muhammad Nahr Awair, stressed the need to end the residents' suffering radically, calling on relevant authorities to find permanent and sustainable solutions to the environmental problem.
The Golden Valley is a watercourse flowing between the towns of Eastern Ghariya and Western Ghariya, and it recently witnessed drying and removal operations of sewage water and accumulated stagnant lakes, through efforts by the Water Resources Directorate and the Daraa Water Department.
