Ahmed Ishaq Shamb, the Minister of Media for the Sudanese Darfur Regional Government, announced that recent airstrikes carried out by the Sudanese Army in the city of Nyala, South Darfur State, inflicted heavy losses in lives and equipment on the Rapid Support Forces. The minister pointed to the continuation of military operations against these forces, affirming that Nyala is no longer a safe haven for them.
For his part, the Sudanese Army announced on Friday that it carried out strikes targeting command centers and deployments of the Rapid Support Forces in Nyala, which it uses as an administrative and military center. The army confirmed that these strikes resulted in the killing of dozens of elements of the fighting forces and the destruction of their command centers, emphasizing the continued targeting of their gatherings.
Shamb added that the strikes were "painful" for the fighting forces, affirming that the army will continue to pursue them up to the area of Umm Duweikat. He affirmed the continuation of military operations, noting that new areas are continuously coming under army control without specifying them. In response, the Rapid Support Forces accused the army of bombing a livestock market in Nyala using a drone, which resulted in civilian casualties.
Nyala is the administrative and military center for the Rapid Support Forces and their allied forces within the "Founding Sudan Alliance." Of the 18 states in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces control most areas of the five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for parts of North and West Darfur states. In contrast, the army controls most areas of the remaining 13 states in the north, east, center, and south of the country, including the capital, Khartoum.
The fighting forces have been waging a war since April 2023, which has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately 13 million people, amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country. It remains unclear whether the strikes announced by the army are the same ones mentioned by the Rapid Support Forces, and it has not been possible to independently verify the casualty toll or the nature of the targets that were bombed.
