Declining Aid and Rising Prices Threaten the Continuation of Nuseirat Soup Kitchens in Gaza
Growing difficulties in providing food for families in Nuseirat camp due to aid cuts and soaring prices amid ongoing Israeli siege.

Charitable soup kitchens in Nuseirat camp in central Gaza Strip are facing increasing difficulties in providing food for needy families due to declining aid and rising prices of basic commodities, threatening their ability to continue and foreshadowing worsening hunger amid the ongoing Israeli siege, border crossings closure, and shortage of humanitarian aid.

Mohammed Al-Hour, a supervisor at the soup kitchen, told SANA that the difficulty in securing some food materials and the cessation of support from several institutions threaten the continuity of meal provision, while many families are unable to meet their food needs amid the Israeli genocide war.

Several camp residents also pointed out that the availability of some goods in markets does not mean they can afford to buy them due to rising prices, lack of job opportunities, and absence of income sources, which increases their dependence on the meals provided by the soup kitchen, which has become the last and only refuge to secure their daily bread after their livelihoods have been cut off.

A widow who supports six children after her husband was killed by an occupation airstrike expressed her fear that her children would suffer from hunger and malnutrition if the soup kitchen stopped working, emphasizing that it represents the primary food source for her family.

She noted that thousands of families rely entirely on the meals provided by the soup kitchens, considering them a last refuge to sustain their members, and warned that their closure could threaten famine.

Since the start of the Israeli genocide war on October 7, 2023, the occupation has bombed dozens of soup kitchens, while the continuous siege on the Strip and the decline in the flow of international aid have led to the closure of many of them, forcing the remaining soup kitchens to reduce the number of meals they provide.

Although the ceasefire agreement that entered into force in October 2025 stipulated allowing the entry of humanitarian and relief aid without restrictions, the Israeli occupation continues to impose strict restrictions on the movement of individuals, goods, and aid, in addition to continuing its attacks which, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, have resulted in the killing and injuring of more than 250,000 Palestinians, including 6,943 killed and injured since the agreement came into effect, alongside widespread destruction and the collapse of basic services.
