The Emergency Response Committee in Deir Ezzor Governorate announced on Sunday the start of rehabilitation works for the earth bridge in the city with a design different from the previous one, following the drop in the water level of the Euphrates River. This measure aims to alleviate the suffering of residents in traveling between the two banks of the river, until the completion of the construction of the sustainable bridge known as the Political Bridge.
The committee chairman, Fayez Abbas, stated in an interview with the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the urgent need to supplement the military bridge with another bridge, which helped facilitate the movement of citizens and enable heavy machinery to carry out the construction of the sustainable bridge, led to the preparation of a new study. He pointed out that the new design allows for the discharge of water volumes ranging between 1200 and 1300 cubic meters per second, with the bridge body raised by about 30 to 40 centimeters.
Construction Details and Pillars
Abbas added that the work involves creating a metal opening on the city side with a length of 70 meters, where workshops are currently laying a rock tongue to reach this distance, in preparation for lowering a basaltic stone that forms the base for constructing the pillars. He noted that the work includes the construction of three pillars; the first in the mentioned area, the second at a distance of 35 meters towards the bank, and the third at the edges of the riverbank on the city side.
Facilitating Passage via Metal Culverts
He clarified that there are two metal openings on the island side with a total length of 90 meters, while the remaining distance, estimated at about 50 meters opposite the river island, will be filled using metal culverts with a length of two meters and a diameter of one meter. This solution facilitates the movement of citizens and the operation of heavy machinery carrying out the sustainable bridge works. The earth bridge had been taken out of service on August 28 due to the high rise in the Euphrates River water level and its scouring of the bridge body.
