The Director of Health in Deir Ezzor Governorate, Dr. Nasr Al-Khalaf, held talks with the World Health Organization (WHO), represented by Dr. Caroline Clarinval and Dr. Omar Saleh, on Tuesday, to discuss ways to close health gaps and activate medical facilities. This meeting is part of efforts to enhance cooperation between the Health Directorate and international organizations, contributing to the development of the health sector and meeting the growing needs in the governorate.
Plan to Activate Existing Hospitals
Al-Khalaf clarified that the meeting focused on assessing the health situation and identifying basic needs to activate hospitals and health centers as soon as possible. He noted that the Health Directorate seeks to utilize available resources despite existing shortages, pointing out that the Ministry of Health has formulated a plan to activate existing hospitals, with coordination underway for its implementation.
Al-Khalaf highlighted that hospitals suffer from high electricity generator consumption and the need for additional generators and oxygen generators. He also explained that frequent maintenance works due to building deterioration and a shortage of specialized medical staff constitute two main challenges facing hospital operations in the governorate.
Coordination with International Organizations
Al-Khalaf pointed out that coordination exists at several levels with international organizations, starting from the International Cooperation Directorate in the Ministry of Health, then the governorate, and reaching the Health Directorate. This coordination aims to identify actual needs based on evidence and figures, and to accompany the return of displaced persons by encouraging their return through ensuring the provision of necessary health services.
The World Health Organization works to support the health sector in Deir Ezzor and address medical gaps through continuous coordination with the Health Directorate and local authorities. The organization contributes, within its ongoing efforts, to raising the readiness of hospitals and medical centers amidst the expansion witnessed by the health sector in the governorate recently.
